Title – Built to Adapt: What AI Changes (and Doesn’t) in Concrete Restoration and Beyond
Presenters: Nick Heim, PE, Jigar B Desai, PhD, PE
Description: AI has moved from a technology topic to a business one. Across the built environment, it is changing how all of us write proposals, review drawings, and build estimates. In concrete restoration, AI now helps interpret reality capture data, flagging cracks and spalls that engineers once tagged photo by photo. But somebody still has to sound the deck and tell the owner what gets fixed first. Some things stay fundamental to our work and to being human: judgment and mentorship.
Nick Heim, PE, and Jigar Desai, PhD, PE, speak as practitioners who use these tools without setting aside the craft of engineering. They will cover three moves: adopt AI where it earns its keep, adapt how judgment and mentorship develop, by design rather than by chance, and aspire to a higher standard, not just a faster one.
Title – AI in Concrete Condition Assessment Technology
Description: A two-part presentation discussing innovative new technology to assist in evaluating concrete structures. The presenters discuss AI and augmented reality post-processing for ground penetrating radar and acoustic sounding equipment. These tools allow practitioners to more accurately evaluate in-situ conditions and more effectively relay these conditions to nontechnical building owners.
Title – How AI changes the landscape of Structural Engineering
Presenters: National Council of Structural Engineers Associations (NCSEA) – Innovation Council
Description: A technical discussion of how artificial intelligence affects the structural engineering landscape. The presentation looks at the technology as the next iteration of innovation, similar to the transition from the mechanical era to that of internet and design software. They will discuss how this affects the day-to-day operations of structural engineering.
